Beautiful production, great translation
By Dominick Bruno Jr.
First off, this book is IMPRESSIVE – tasteful understated cover design, beautiful paper, thick & HEAVY.The translation work is clean and well documented, though the fact that it’s translated from the Persian can sometimes cause the transliterations to be a little confusing for someone used to Arabic transliterations. While the translator should be applauded for the faithfulness, the variant spellings can be jarring sometimes. The text itself is absolutely stunning – written very much in a question & answer format, the similarity in style to the knowledge lectures of the Masons & other secret societies is so spot on, it makes one wonder if there really was some cross-pollination of thought going on. The text goes through an array of topics from Muslim obligations, to social roles, to weaponry, and explains each item on three levels – revealing hidden, inner meanings (termed “batin” in Arabic) of great value in understanding the reasoning behind the actions of the great Muslim emirs, many of whom were universally respected by friend and foe alike.Despite it’s imposing size, it’s a pretty quick read, though a book one will find oneself returning to over and over to digest. It pretty thoroughly makes al-Sulami’s “Way of Sufi Chivalry” look like a introductory, primer text, and that’s exactly what I’d suggest – pick up al-Sulami’s book to acquaint yourself with futuwwah first, then pick this up. I suggest a quick read, and then more detailed, chapter-by-chapter study. Also, one interestig note – while most books on these topics (like “Way of Sufi Chivalry”) are written from an orthodox Sunni Islam perspective, this one is notable in that it appears to be written from the perspective of Shia Islam. Haven’t had time to check the dates, but there was a point when certain more spiritual/mystical-inclined sects of Shia Islam were being persecuted and were forced to find refuge amongst the Sunni communities, so it may date from around that time or shortly afterwards & represent some blending of thought. The only drawback, in my opinion, is the price of the book. While it is worth every penny, and it is warranted by the beautiful production values, I’d like to see a budget edition of this book so it could be more accessible to students – both of history and of futuwwah.
