The weeks and months following the death of a spouse can be times of shock and intense grief. After that initial period, however, the one who has been widowed comes to the realization that life goes on, even if in a way that is profoundly changed.
Elizabeth Bookser Barkley lost her husband, Scott, in 1999. With three daughters to raise alone, she found that moving forward was made easier through the strength of friends and by staying in touch with her spiritual core. Life After Death is for those who have passed through that initial period of grief, and have begun to settle into a new life of living as a widow or widower. It is a book filled with the hope that comes from patience and understanding, from a willingness to believe that our lives continue to be enriched by not only the relationship we had with our spouse, but by our relationships with family, friends, and God.
The book is formed around practical topics that Barkley has taken from her own experience of widowhood, with advice from several grief support group leaders. It includes examples not only from Barkley’s life, but from the lives of the women and men she has met over the years. Each chapter is enriched with practical information, as well as references to literature, saints, the Bible, and contemporary culture.

Truly practical help
By Carol Blank
In 1999, Elizabeth Bookser Barkley’s husband Scott was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. After several months of treatment he died, at age 53, leaving three teen-aged daughters and his wife of 23 years. Her book, Life after Death, offers an intimate look at what is involved in facing such a loss. It addresses general challenges for the widowed including financial planning; immediate and long-term decisions; dating; and caring for spiritual, physical, and emotional health. Each chapter ends with reflection points, information on a role model, and an original prayer. Most of the role models appear to be personal acquaintances of the author, but three are known more widely: Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Jane de Chantal, and Vice President Joe Biden, whose wife and daughter were killed in a car accident just after he was elected to the U.S. senate. The author’s own experiences and those of numerous others are embedded in each chapter along with a wealth of resources to help the widowed “begin to understand that there is nothing wrong with you for being despondent or feeling physically ill in the weeks or months after your loss,” regardless of what others may say.On the spiritual side, Barkley shares the importance of prayer and ritual in her own healing. For example, she found inspiration to begin praying the psalms based on the writings of Scripture scholar Walter Brueggemann. In the book she devotes four or five pages to her approach and the results. All in all, Life after Death provides an effective balance of data, personal stories, resources, and prayer. The subtitle “Practical Help for the Widowed” says it all.

Good reading for every new widow or widower
By Jerry
I read this several months after my second wife passed away, and having become a widower twice, I can say that Elizabeth provides some good insights in this book. Everyone is different, but some basic thoughts and informative facts are well presented so that each person will take away some ideas that are helpful to them.
