A riveting historical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America’s most infamous act of treason . . .
Everyone knows Benedict Arnold—the Revolutionary War general who betrayed America and fled to the British—as history’s most notorious turncoat. Many know Arnold’s co-conspirator, Major John André, who was apprehended with Arnold’s documents in his boots and hanged at the orders of General George Washington. But few know of the integral third character in the plot: a charming young woman who not only contributed to the betrayal but orchestrated it.
Socialite Peggy Shippen is half Benedict Arnold’s age when she seduces the war hero during his stint as military commander of Philadelphia. Blinded by his young bride’s beauty and wit, Arnold does not realize that she harbors a secret: loyalty to the British. Nor does he know that she hides a past romance with the handsome British spy John André. Peggy watches as her husband, crippled from battle wounds and in debt from years of service to the colonies, grows ever more disillusioned with his hero, Washington, and the American cause. Together with her former love and her disaffected husband, Peggy hatches the plot to deliver West Point to the British and, in exchange, win fame and fortune for herself and Arnold.
Told from the perspective of Peggy’s maid, whose faith in the new nation inspires her to intervene in her mistress’s affairs even when it could cost her everything, The Traitor’s Wife brings these infamous figures to life, illuminating the sordid details and the love triangle that nearly destroyed the American fight for freedom.

AN ENTRANCING HISTORICAL NOVEL!
By Khamneithang Vaiphei
The Traitor’s Wife by Allison Pataki is an entrancing historical novel soaked in romance, lust, conspiracy, and loyalty bringing both its perfidious and faithful characters to life in ways only a debutant of Allison’s creativity and caliber could manage. It is also a story of one’s heart staying true to the bigger picture of life, nullifying the immediate in the ultimate pursuit of the greater good, and readers will have a difficult time putting the book on the shelf. The novel is based on the life of General Benedict Arnold, who was a merchant when the American Revolutionary War broke out in 1775. He joined the army and distinguished himself. He was involved in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775, the Battle of Valcour Island in 1776, the Battle of Ridgefield, and the Battles of Saratoga in 1777. He was charged with corruption and other cases, but when Congress investigated it was found that he was spending much of his own money on the war effort. Exasperated and bitter, Arnold changed sides. His plot was exposed when British Major John André was captured carrying papers that exposed the strategy. Learning of André’s capture, Arnold fled down the Hudson River to the British warship, HMS Vulture. But the story is more about his scheming and manipulative wife, Margaret “Peggy” Shippen Arnold, told through the eyes of a fictional maid Clara Bell. Described as a fine-featured woman, her hair piled high atop her head, always wearing a quizzical smile on her face, Peggy was a devoted wife, loving mother, a popular socialite who influenced Benedict Arnold to turn against the cause for which he fought with courage and bravery. The book covers a period of over two years from May 1778 to September 1780 during the American Revolutionary War. While Clara and the other servants are pure embodiments of the spirit of the period, revolution, Peggy is portrayed as a conniving lady, who uses her charm to seduce British soldiers, and flirt without any inhibition. The Traitor’s Wife by Allison Pataki is the story of America’s heroes and traitors; moments of triumph and moments of near disaster; stories of love and stories of lust. It retraces the steps of one of history’s most scandalous would-be power couples, a majestic and sweeping retelling of a chapter in history that proves that real life is more interesting than fiction.

Disappointing!
By Onyonhill
I bought this book after I heard Cathy Lee Gifford on the Today show describe it as an excellent and important historical novel which she had spent twelve hours reading over the weekend. Because of this fulsome praise, I did not download and read the sample as I usually do. An unfortunate mistake. Ten pages into the book I realized it would more accurately be described as Gothic Romance…..a genre I try to avoid.

Wish there were a G-Rated version so I could share with my kids
By Katiemc10
This book was an excellent historical fiction, filled with the facts. The author, Allison Pataki, does an excellent job of engaging her audience. She turns an otherwise somewhat dry history lesson into a page-turner of a novel. My only regret is that I can’t share it with my children because of the graphic sex scenes. I think the book would have been even better without the sex scene in the bath tub. As a home schooling mom of four, I can guarantee there is a huge market for historical fiction sans R rated material. I would urge Ms. Pataki make available an edited version for a younger audience. It’s so important to teach our children the history of our country. Historical novels are an excellent way to engage a younger reader.
