Exquisite writing, Passionate Romance & Unshakeable Faith
By EMH
Oh my. Let me begin by saying that Julie Lessman is, and has been for quite awhile now, my favorite author ever!! And this book…OH MY! Putting this book down every time that I had to was painful! It was definitely lighter and funnier than her other books, which I adored because it separated the characters. At first I wondered if when I read about Cassidy, would it be like reading about Faith, or Charity or Lizzie, Katie, Emma and Annie. But it wasn’t! Cassidy was a whole new personality that I fell absolutely, positively in love with. And Jamie? Can all us girls say ‘swoon’? ;)Cassidy McClare comes to San Francisco looking to forget the fortune hunter who jilted her and heal her heart in the warm, loving arms of her family.Jamie MacKenna wants nothing more than to marry well in order to provide a better life for his mother and sister, and to help get his sister the surgery she desperately needs. When Jamie meets the Texas oil heiress, Cassie McClare, he starts to believe that he can get love and money all in one package…until he finds out Cassie is probably poorer than he is.This book stole my heart in so many ways! The playful teasing and flirting between Cassie and Jamie, the light funny dialogue that had me laughing, not to mention the sweet yet steamy kissing scenes that never fail to bring a grin to my face. As Jamie and Cassie discover love, tension is thrown into the mix with the painful history that stands like a brick wall between Caitlyn McClare and Logan McClare. I refuse to give anything too important away, but those two are one of the many reasons I am now bouncing up and down, anxious to get my hands on the next book!!Julie Lessman has once again weaved a tale of passionate love, unshakeable faith, and painful realities that are faced by each and every one of us every day. Releasing everything into God’s hands, especially the people you love so dearly and want to protect, can be a very difficult thing. But it is always the right and perfect thing to do. Once again, Julie has given me a story to cherish and has reminded us that every perfect love story always, without fail, has God at the center. Thank you Julie, for your exquisite writing, your passion for romance but most importantly, your ability to put down on paper what we as weak human beings strive to achieve every day in our hearts. Eternal, steadfast, absolute faith in God.

was not able to really get into the book…..

Book: Love at any CostISBN# 978-0-8007-2167-1Every once in a while I am surprised that I just can’t seem to get into a story.I expect most stories to grab and keep my attention but every once in a while I get a book and wonder why I am unable to really dive into the story line and enjoy it.While Historical Christian Romance books are my favorite books to read and I rarely dislike a good love story. This one just did not do it for me.Love at any Cost, by Julie Lessman, is a story about a young woman in Texas, whose fiancĂ© calls off the wedding a week before the big day. His reasons seem to have to do with her father losing money in the oil business.Cassidy travels to California to stay with her aunt and cousins. Not long after arriving there, a lawyer local to the area, known as Jamie McKenna becomes attracted to Cassidy and eagerly pursues her. He, just like some of the other good-for-nothing men in her life, has his sights set on her father’s money and all that it could bring for his career and his ailing mother and disabled sister.Cassidy McClare, a spunky, energetic character who had her mind set on never letting her heart be broken again is determined to protect her heart, if it is the last thing she does.I must say, I would wear cowgirl boots too if I were her, in that place in time, and I don’t think I would do very well with a girdle squashing my insides! There are many things in this book that were very good. First, one of the main subjects addressed numerous times was the importance of marrying a man who loves The Lord.I appreciated that Cassidy’s Aunt told her why this was significant, from her own experiences, and why it is always God’s design.I also appreciated the fact that the family cherished time together, and placed value on relationships and family staying together through good times and bad.So I guess what I feel was lacking with this book, was that Cassidy’s character for me did not fit with the era of the story. I thought it was written somewhat present day. I just can’t see a woman of that day and age saying “pretty men” or “pretty boy” that much. Her quote: “Fooled by a pretty boy once, shame on him. Fooled by a pretty boy twice, shame on me” \could have been a popular saying back then, but for me it just seemed out of place, for the time period.I did love this quote however: “Always remember,” Nana would say, “Life is an adventure and every day a fresh start . . . especially with God by your side.”I could very well be off my rocker as I know lots of people LOVE this book, so just because I was not “into it” It may very well be your cuppa tea! “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.Available at your favourite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group”.

Disappointing…
By CLF
I loved Julie Lessman’s previous novels and was so excited when I got this one…but it was like reading a whole new author (in a bad way). The storyline was forced, it took waaaay too long to resolve the main problem and the characters felt fake. She used the same phrases over and over, especially super cheesy, over-the-top Texas ones. If I had to read “hog-tied” one more time… Not to mention how many times the male characters “gritted their teeth” or “ground their jaw” or “clenched their jaw”…these guys must have permanent TMJ damage. I don’t know if the author felt stuck with their characters or was feeling the pressure of starting a new series or what but needless to say, it was disappointing. I’m actually shocked at how high other ratings are!Number one problem I had with this book: the conversion scene did not mention Jesus at all. AT ALL. You have to do more than “talk to God” for salvation–Jesus is our mediator and through his life, death, and resurrection we are saved and seen as acceptable in God’s sight. This is amazing news–highlight it!
