LIMITED DISCOUNT TODAY The Spiritual Challenge of Midlife: Crisis and Opportunity
In this concise volume the world-renowned spiritual master, Anselm Grün, invites readers to understand the twofold nature of midlife: on the one hand it is associated with a variety of problems or crises. On the other, it provides powerful opportunities for spiritual growth. This challenge–which is an inevitable work of God’s grace–is an invitation into the fullness of our vocation.
Anselm Grün brings together ancient and modern thought, including the spirituality of the medieval mystic Johannes Tauler and the psychology of Carl Jung, in order to foster greater self-understanding during midlife.

Within the pages of this very readable and remarkably practical ‘manual for middle age’ (the reviewer’s term) Anselm Grun, a Benedictine monk and theologian, presents the reader with a feasible ‘twin-faced’ model of the nature of life in the ‘middle years’. And it runs something like this; firstly, middle age evokes doleful thoughts of ill health, problems or the oft’ mentioned crises. Secondly, though, Grun points out,it can also offer immense potential for spiritual growth. It is this latter point, which the author sees as being an inevitable act of God’s grace, which he focuses much of his attention upon. In one sense, it is presented as being part of our human spirituality and a completion of our human vocation.Grun attempts to synthesise ancient and modern thoughts and theosophies, and even draws upon the spirituality of the German medieval mystic Johannis Tauler (c1300-1361) and the rather more contemporary psychology and theology of Carl Jung. Exactly how successful this very competent writer and practical theologian is will depend to a great extent upon the life-setting of the reader (or patient!) but this little work deserves attention from anyone within its targeted readership.Michael calum Jacques
