WHEN THE VILLAGE OF FARTHERING ST. JOHN IS Stunned BY A SERIES OF MURDERS, DREW FARTHERING IS DRAWN again INTO THE SLEUTHING GAME.
Drew Farthering wanted nothing more than to end the summer of 1932 with the announcement of his engagement. Instead, he finds himself caught up in another mysterious case when the family solicitor is found murdered, an antique hatpin with a cryptic message, Advice to Jack, piercing his chest.
Evidence of secret meetings and a young girl’s tearful confession point to the victim’s double life, but what does the solicitor’s murder have to do with the murder of a physician on the local golf course? Nothing, it would seem–except for another puzzling note, affixed with a similar-looking bloodied hatpin.
Soon the police make an arrest in connection with the murders, but Drew isn’t at all certain they have the right suspect in custody. And why does his investigation seem to be drawing him closer and closer to home?

A quote in a note is a clue to murder
By Pat Browning
It’s the summer of 1932 in the English village of Farthering St. John, where a series of bizarre murders has villagers on edge. Protagonist Drew Farthering, lord of the manor and gentleman of the old school, plays the reluctant amateur sleuth.Drew’s social standing gives him access to village gossip that the police don’t have. Chief Inspector Birdsong grumps about it but tolerates Drew’s assistance. Drew is aided and abetted by his best friend, Nick, the butler’s son who was raised with Drew after Nick’s mother died; and Madeline, an American debutante who came to visit but fell in love with Drew and stayed. The murders come in quick succession. First, a lawyer, followed by a doctor, then a woman known for her Bohemian lifestyle. In each case, a seemingly random note is pinned to the body by a Victorian hatpin. Drew, Nick and Madeline, all well-read, try to puzzle out the source of the note quotes as clues to the killer’s identity. In a humorous story thread, Drew’s charm and sensitivity are tested by the arrival of Madeline’s Aunt Ruth. She steams in from America to save her niece from “shifty-eyed” foreigners, especially Englishmen whose “foreign ways are no match for honest American truth.”Drew confronts the killer in a scene both frightening and poignant, with the perfect classical quote to wrap it up.

An extremely well written and delightful mystery
By Joan N.
I grew up on Agatha Christie, P. G. Wodehouse, Dorothy Sayers, and the like. I love British mysteries and I love the ones Deering has created.I love the witty and “terribly clever” dialog, the tongue in cheek comments, the repartee between Drew and Madeline. I love the characters – that Aunt Ruth, the “old pepper pot,” is a kick! I love the Chief Inspector Birdsong and his relationship with “Detective” Farthering.Drew is just a darling fellow, such a gentleman, and a fine Christian. He is so in love with Madeline. He has an insatiable curiosity and is intrigued by the murders, even though they are becoming uncomfortably close. He’s pretty smart too, even if he did miss the clue when it nearly bumped into him. He is certainly a hero worthy of any British maiden.I love the way the mystery is slowly but methodically investigated, how the author has deftly choreographed the action. I love the literary references to Shakespeare and the overall writing style. I love the author’s use of language. (When was the last time you saw “lief” in a novel?) I love the bit of humor added from time to time. I love how this is a thinking person’s mystery. This is a delightful British murder mystery set in the 1930s. It is extremely well written with the perfect balance of developing plot and compelling dialog. I do hope they’ll be another in the series soon.I received a complimentary egalley of this novel from the publisher for the purpose of this independent and honest review.

An excellent addition to the Drew Farthering Mystery Series.
By Indiana Jeff Reynolds
If you enjoy a retro, 30′s era mystery, you’ll enjoy this novel. Another reviewer said it was in the style of Christie. While fans of Dame Agatha probably would enjoy it, I disagree. Julianna Deering has her own unique voice, creating a series of novels that gets your brain thinking while you’re enjoying jaunting around small town, depression era England. The characters are very complex and entertaining. I’m a reader who enjoys characters that not only come to life, but you’d probably enjoy having them at your dinner table. Drew and Madelyn and Nick and Inspector Birdsong and the rest accomplish that.I’ve read some mysteries where the “sleuth” seems to have gotten their lessons from Inspector Cluseau (Pink Panther). Not so here. The mystery enfolds in a way that makes you think as well as the sleuth, and how he figures things out on his own. Likewise, the professional inspector is no dimwit either. The humor is from the lighthearted story telling. And you won’t believe _________ ________ is the murderer! Should I have given a spoiler alert here? Point is — you’ll be smiling and guessing through this tale.Should you read the first book first? I would say yes, but not because you’d get lost. No, you can thoroughly enjoy it on its own … except at one point it gives away the ending of the first. So I’d advise starting with Rules For Murder. But that’s my opinion — they’re both top notch mysteries.I highly recommend Death By The Book, especially if you love cozy mysteries like I do.I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my unbiased review.
