In the earliest days of the church, followers of Jesus embraced five core spiritual gifts—apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers—and the world was set on fire as a result. Over the past two thousand years, however, some of these gifts have been neglected or set aside, and we’ve forgotten what we’re capable of.
Now, in Primal Fire, Neil Cole shares the surprising truth about the five gifts of Jesus—what they mean, how they reflect Christ, and the remarkable power and synergy that comes when we all work together to ignite the church’s full potential and passion.
Whether you’re a church leader who wants to equip your members to grow spiritually, or someone who wants to better understand your own contribution to the body of Christ, it’s time to reignite the Primal Fire and become the gifts that Christ intended for us to be.

An Actionable Merger of Missional and Organic Church Concepts!
By Miguel
This is by far Neil’s best work. In fact, it’s probably the best book I’ve read in the last 10 years. Neil makes some boldly profound propositions throughout this work which are worthy of a robust and continuing conversation. The introduction and three following sections of the book build on one another in a crescendoing cadence that will make you want to read the whole book in one setting. If you do that, then make sure you read it again and again. This book can serve as a diagnostic tool for church, church leadership, church maturity, and mission. I did not want to do the kind of review of this book where I lay out its outline in such a way that will give you impression that you don’t need to read it because “you get it.” You need to read it for yourself. But, I’ll reference one quote:”Today the resistance toward the apostolic and prophetic from the religious institution is not any less. Instead of making martyrs of these people and then having to raise statues in their name (like the first century religious leaders Jesus spoke against), the religious leaders of our day have found it far easier to theologically define these gifts out of existence. Instead of killing them in public, they have aborted them in the wombs of their theological textbooks, classrooms, boardrooms and pulpits.”The time for making paradigm shifts is over, if those shifts don’t result in the making of disciples. Neil’s trajectory of service through cooperative community is sure to challenge your comfortable church constructs. I’m not a theoretician or a theologian, I am a missionary who has observed the concepts laid out in this book in real life as we live and move and have our being in service to God.

Primal Fire
By Jena Wells
Loved it! Very clear and challenging! I’m starting to read it again already. I so appreciate Neil’s passion to give apostles a seat at the table again as well as his understanding for the need of the other 4 gifts of Ephesians 4:11 specifically in church plantingNathan Wells

learn more about the APEST gifts – forgotten or ignored
By Karl Dumas
A different Neil Cole than I’ve read before. Primal Fire: Reigniting the Church with the Five Gifts of Jesus (Tyndale Momentum, 2014) addresses five important gifts that are mentioned in Ephesians, and in many cases seem to have been forgotten or ignored. Cole makes a strong case that the gifts are important to the church today, and should be sought out, and allowed and encouraged to develop. He goes on to say that the Teacher and the Shepherd are often confused and used interchangeably, but that is far from the original intent. The other gifts that he mentions are the Apostle, the Prophet and the Evangelist. Together he calls his grouping the APEST gift.As he discusses the gifts, he refers frequently to a group of men that work with him on a regular basis, men who each have one of these gifts, and he uses this group to show how these gifts are meant to work together, how those who have these gifts are meant to work together for the good of Christ’s Church.I have read some of Cole’s other books and was expecting something along the same lines as Search and Rescue or Organic Church. Initially I was disappointed, but the more I read, the more the book made sense. As a Pastor, (Shepherd) it becomes clear that the job of “equipping the saints” involves much more than looking for someone who has a gift of caring, hospitality or administration.Food for thought.Read the first chapter here: [...]or follow Neil’s blog: [...]I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a review.
