Christian Flemish Mystic
By Meow Tomcat
John of Ruysbroeck (1273- 1381), a Catholic priest, was the greatest of the Flemish mystics. Ruysbroeck’s mysticism is “at once so intimate in its feeling, so vast in its reach– a deeply poetic strain.” He wrote many books and three of the best were The Adornment of the Spiritual Marriage, The Sparkling Stone and The Book of Supreme Truth. His fame as a mystic and teacher spread from Holland to Germany, France and England. In whatever condition, in sound mind and body or not, many came to him for direction.Evelyn Underhill, an authority on Ruysbroeck and other Christian mystics, wrote the 21 page introduction in 1916. This Christian Classics (Westminster, Maryland) publication (1974) is a handsome paperback to treasure.
