The kind people of Amana have been her guiding light, but her greatest trial is yet to come…
West Amana, Iowa, 1890
After Andrea Wilson receives the devastating news that her husband has been lost at sea, she returns home to Iowa with her young son, Lukas. But what she finds there causes more heartache: The family farm has burned and her father has died, leaving Andrea with nothing.
Andrea must rely on the kindness of the people from the nearby Amana village who invite her to stay with them for a time. She discovers much generosity and contentment among the Amanans–especially from the tinsmith, Dirk Knefler, who takes her son under his wing. But is the simple, cloistered life in Amana what Andrea wants for Lukas’s future? Is she willing to give up the comforts and freedom of the outside world? And when yet another round of shocking news comes her way, will Andrea ever be able to find the serenity and hope that have eluded her for so long?

Excellent book!
By Amber Hill
The book begins with Andrea Wilson receiving news of her husband’s death at sea. Struggling financially, Andrea decides to return to her father’s home with her young son. Upon arriving at the homestead, she learns that her father sold the farm and died in a fire. She is offered refuge in the Amana colony and there she makes friends, finds peace, love, and grows closer to God. Rather than mourning her husband’s death, she is finally free of his abuse and falls in love with someone who treats her right. In a surprising and disappointing turn of events, Andrea has to learn to lean on God and to trust in His plan even when she doesn’t understand it. In the end, she finds that God’s plan is always for her good.ReviewI really enjoyed this book. It is the second book that I have read by Judith Miller and I have enjoyed them both. The characters were well-developed and each had their own personal journey in learning to trust in God’s plan. The book was written from multiple character’s perspectives and this changed from chapter to chapter. As long as I paid attention to who first-person speaker was, it was no problem to follow. The author not only wrote from various perspectives, but she wrote in the voice of the character which made it much easier to follow than it might have otherwise been. The plot was interesting! It was full of surprises, some good, some bad, but all making the story better. The book took me on an emotional rollercoaster as I sympathized with the protagonists and despised the antagonist and worried for the little boy caught in the middle.I loved that this wasn’t just a book that mentioned God a few times and was a clean novel, but really wove a relationship with God all throughout the book. It made me think about how God’s plan is always for our good and we can trust Him even when we can’t see the end from the beginning.I highly recommend this book.*I was provided with a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review* For more reviews of books similar to this one, visit my blog at [...]

A Shining Light is book three in the Home to Amana series by Judith Miller. However, reading the previous novels is not necessary before reading this one. The book is written from the perspective of several of the characters. At times this was a little confusing and switching my train of thought usually took a couple of sentences. I think the story would have flowed more smoothly if it had been told from one perspective. Life lessons are abounding in this book, and simple acts of kindness are common throughout. This book is a great example of how to love God and love others. I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Fantastic Read!
By Rolisweet
This is a story of God’s redeeming love and care. It’s a perfect rendition of love in action. I’m usually an avid reader of Amish Christian Fiction, however, I’m so glad I chose to read this heartwarming story of the Amana way of life. After learning that her husband has been lost at sea, Andrea and her son Lukas set off on a journey to travel back home to live with her father in Iowa. Once they arrive, they find that her father is no longer living and has sold the farm to the Amana community. Left with no money and no place to live, Andrea and Lukas are taken in by this wonderful community known as the Amana village. They both experience a love like they’ve never known before from the Amana people, and soon become a part of this loving community. After a time of living in this community their world is turned upside down, and it takes forgiveness on the part of Andrea, and the love of a good man, Dirk, to show her that God is a loving father and does allow His children to have second chances. This book was a great read from start to finish. Admittedly, it was hard to put down and I was sad to see the story come to an end.Thank you Bethany House Publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book! For more reviews and great simple recipes follow my blog/website at [...]
